Below I’ve listed stories that feature secret hiding places or secret passageways that open into new universes. The common theme of these stories is discovering something healing or magical or redemptive. The hero or heroine must endure all sorts of trials and/or adventures to bring the life-affirming knowledge back into the “real” world. There is always an element of risk and sacrifice. And yet often, the heroes and heroines are children.
The Secret Garden (a forgotten and neglected place right on the property)
The Narnia Series (a wardrobe that leads to a magic kingdom)
The Golden Compass Series (a knife that can slice the air at certain points to rip open entry into a new universe)
Harry Potter (a train stop in Muggle land, and all sorts of places within the world of wizardry)
Alice in Wonderland (dropping down the rabbit hole)
King Arthur stories: (access to the island of Avalon and Merlin’s cave)
Twelve Dancing Princesses (a secret door under their beds, accessed only at night.)
Wizard of Oz (a bash to Dorothy’s head and she’s knocked out to dream)
The Snowman (a snowman comes alive to help a young boy fly through the air to reach the North Pole on Christmas Eve)
Can you add to the list?
The next entry for Tete-a-Tete Tuesdays will be about a secret place of my own I discovered only several years ago.

Oh my ~ I’ve passed the mid-life point! :~ (
Ah, that is the “clinical” definition only!

Reading with our kids is THE BEST! Have fun! I miss that part of raising children a great deal.
