Heart On My Sleeve

One Woman's Journey Through Mid-Life: ReFashioning, ReDefining, ReNewing

About

Writing and artisan crafting are passionate hobbies. By profession I am a voice trainer, musician and singer. I am married and we have two young adult children, ages 23 and 19.

I am also a woman in her midlife years. The American Journal of Obstetrics defines “midlife” as the ages between 35-60! They are talking about the myriad of fluid hormonal shifts and psychological changes that are part of a woman’s body and mind during these ages.   Most of us, still trying to live in a patriarchal mind set, still do not understand what it means to live in harmony with these hormonal shifts and psychological changes.

I called this blog “Heart on My Sleeve” because it started as a place for me to try to honor these mighty hormonal and psychological shifts of midlife. Reconnecting consciously to my own inner life through writing, crafting and exploring spiritual traditions has helped this process.

I am sure it seems odd that a professional musician and music teacher should have to reconnect to her “inner life–some might think that I automatically would connect into “the inner life” on a daily basis because it is music, after all!

Perhaps some are able, but I was not. A whole book could be written about how and why, but let’s just say that neglecting the Self and Muse in favor of tending others and a steady paycheck is not that uncommon among artists who teach. It turns out that midlife offers us a chance to change all that, if we are willing to see the world and ourselves through a different lens.

I have picked up some subscribers who are going through similar things. And a special “thank you!” to friends and colleagues who have supported my love of writing and making refashioned jewelry.

I hope you enjoy what you read and see!

Hi! Very, very interesting to see where your life is leading you! While your blog is fascinating, I’d like to catch up person to person. Do you have a moment for some face time in your busy schedule?

Nancy, I hear, is making great progress working with you!

  3. That is one of the most wonderful things I have read lately! What an amazing difference you are making in the lives of others! You rock!

  4. Thank you, fishyfacedesigns! Blessings on you and yours, too!

  5. I’m a Camelot baby from DC 1961 as old as The Rolling Stones, and, as you see, a musician!
